VICTORY’s custom built enclosures answer the call for the ever increasing demand for quieter systems. VICTORY has been manufacturing sound attenuated generator enclosures and fuel base tanks for almost 20 years. Systems are designed for all models and brands of generators - both diesel and natural gas - for specific applications to meet the most intense specifications.

The Importance of Sound Attenuation

Sound attenuation has become one of the most critical issues that must be addressed when installing stand-by generator systems. Zoning ordinances, property covenants, and persistent neighbors can dictate how much or how little sound can be emitted from your system. Most stand-by power systems are controlled by exerciser programs, which automatically operate the generator on a predetermined schedule. During a power outage the generator system can be the only source of noise in the area. These situations often prompt neighbors to register complaints, which can cause your system to be labeled a nuisance, and can threaten your business.

Site-Specific Sound Enclosures

Knowing and meeting the requirements is critical.  Unfortunately it is rare that the proper research is conducted to assess sound emission rules. Even more precarious, a community may not even have defined the acceptable sound level, which could lead to a challenge wherein any noise is too much. Either way, it is always advantageous to address the issue proactively. Experienced VICTORY engineers assist in the permitting process to ensure your installation is accepted.

Defining Acceptable Levels

There are many methods to define acceptable noise levels. Some simply define an acceptable sound level at the property line. Others add complexity by defining a running 24 hour average or determining different acceptable levels for the day and night.

Many use a measurement of the ambient noise as the acceptable level. Ambient noise is a base measurement of an area’s sound level without the equipment in question operating. When faced with a requirement using an ambient level or any unidentified sound level derived from some equation of existing noise, you need to perform a study to define the acceptable sound level. VICTORY helps you by performing site visits to develop baseline noise levels and ensure your system will be a proper fit for the application.

Measuring Sound

Sound is measured in decibels (dB) and is broken down by the frequency (Hz). The A scale of decibels includes only those frequencies that can be processed by the human ear (dBa). The A scale frequencies range from 63Hz to 10,000Hz. Generator systems create noise in several ways. Turbochargers and aftercoolers will emit high frequency noise. Mechanical noise and combustion or exhaust create low frequency noise. The cooling fan typically generates the majority of the system’s noise. This is also the most difficult area to deal with because the airflow through the radiator is easily affected. Careful calculations are required to insure proper system operation and adequate sound control are both accomplished. VICTORY has the knowledge and resources to design and build the right product to meet the specific customer requirements.
